Writing an Effective Cover Letter

Cover letters are a key factor when applying and getting hired for projects on oDesk. When a buyer received tens or perhaps hundreds of cover letters for any given project, you have to make sure that yours is up to par and stands out from the rest.

Many providers write up a generic cover letter that they use for every project that they apply for. You may consider this a time saver, but buyers can see right through it and are not impressed. Often, buyers will require that you add something in your cover letter to let them know that you read the entire project description.

We all want to save time and accomplish as much as we can in the shortest amount of time. Creating a cover letter template is a great alternative to the generic cover letter.

Firstly, write a generic but unique cover letter. oDesk has examples of what a good cover letter looks like, and also what poor cover letters look like. Next, highlight key places in the cover letter where you will personalize it for every project that you apply for. If the buyer adds their name to the project description, be sure to address them in the beginning of the cover letter. Save a complete paragraph dedicated to addressing project specifics. Be sure to mention any experience that you have relating to the project, and don't forget to refer to any tests you've taken that reinforce your claims of competence.

By creating a cover letter template like this, you will save time and ensure that your application creates a good impression for the buyer and your future potential employer.

Introduction to oDesk

I hope that everyone had an excellent holiday season this year! Happy 2009!

That said, I guess it's time for all of us to get back to work. I think that many people are considering a career change this year, so let's talk about work at home opportunity with oDesk!

I have had a lot of success with oDesk and I think that it is the number one choice for beginner freelancers.

Firstly, oDesk is an online staffing marketplace and management platform that provides a convenient way for buyers and providers to meet and work together. If you are interested in working as a freelance provider, you can use oDesk to browse and bid on projects. oDesk offers a very user-friendly, feature-rich environment.

oDesk offers both hourly and fixed-rate paying projects, which is terrific depending on your preference. I have worked both hourly and fixed-rate projects and can say that both have their benefits.

If you are looking for a relatively short-term project with a fixed price that you can do in your own sweet time, then fixed-rate is the way to go. You can pick up a fixed-rate project whenever you want to, and then when it's finished, apply for more. Fixed-rate projects are great for people looking for a second income.

I prefer hourly projects. I like having a long-term project and the opportunity to build a long-term business relationship with my employer. The hours are fairly consistent with hourly projects, and you can choose projects between 10 and 40 hours weekly, depending on the project conditions.

oDesk has a great payment system where buyers and providers are both equally protected and virtually guaranteed payment. They offer direct deposit you’re your bank account which is very convenient. oDesk has many tools to help you succeed.

Visit my website to see the oDesk Video Tutorials that I have there. You can also browse the newest projects on oDesk. I have a lot more information for new freelancers who want to get started. There are also some helpful articles from experienced work at home freelancers.
